Annual Data Protection Conference in Ireland

The Association of Data Protection Officers in Ireland and ICS held the 14th Annual Data Protection Conference – ‘Beyond Policy: How can data protection keep pace with the world of technology?’ in Croke Park, Dublin on May 16th.

Tuesday 16th May 2023

The Irish community of cross-sectoral Data Protection professionals came together last week to engage on the challenges and opportunities driven by the major developments in fast-moving technology. As we know, Artificial Intelligence (AI), is challenging the speed at which Data Protection Officers and Privacy Professionals can implement GDPR policy and practice.

Five years on from the GDPR, the conference set out to ask where are we now? And where are we going? Experts from across the academic, regulatory, business and legal sectors shared their views in a series of presentations and panel discussions.

Rob Corbett, Partner and Head of Technology & Innovation Arthur Cox LLP kicked things off with an in-depth look at Generative AI and the GDPR, including pinpointing where GDPR is adaptable for AI and where it isn’t.

Roisin Costelloe, Barrister and Assistant Professor in DCU, shed light on the recent Case-Law of the Court of Justice of the European Union in relation to GDPR, which is particularly timely considering the recent record fines incurred by Meta of €1.2b for the mishandling of user information.

Along with an update from the Data Protection Commission from Deputy Commissioner David Murphy and many more expert speakers and panel discussions, the 14th Annual Data Protection Conference once more brought the community of data professionals across Ireland together to network, connect and share their experience and expertise.
